A training day was held for teenagers interested in fire service.

According to the Galesburg Public Information Officer, the Galesburg Fire Department and the Illinois Fire Service Institute teamed up on Saturday, April 13 to host the Cadet Field Training Day in Galesburg.

Fire Cadets from age 15 – 19 were invited to attend the class. They learned basic firefighting skills, personal safety, and fire behavior.

Using hands-on activities Fire Explorers got instruction in breathing apparatuses, forcible entry, ladder skills, fire hose deployment, and techniques used in search and rescue.

Illinois Fire Service instructors were assisted by off-duty Galesburg firefighters.

The Galesburg Area Vocational Center Fire Science program has been offered for the last three years. Leaders of the program have been Galesburg Fire Department Captains Steve Selliers and Scott Benson who are stationed at the Training Facility. The two have worked to provide training to area firefighters and the fire science program is an effort to interest high school students in fire service.

The program aims to attract a high school aged students to fire service.
