Davenport 5k racers avoid obstacles and zombies

An unusual 5k run took place on Saturday, where the participants didn’t just have other racers after them.

The first annual Zombie Run on Credit Island in Davenport not only offered zombies but obstacles for racers to tackle. Volunteer zombies dressed in undead-clothing and completed the look with gory makeup.

Runners were given a set of flags at the start of the race on Saturday, April 13. Coming in contact with the ghouls was inevitable, but the goal for each racer was to finish with at least one flag.

Race organizers said runners tried several tactics to elude the monsters.

“That’s one of the tactics they’re using is safety in numbers,” said Rod Keding, race director. “Speed is the key.”

Some of the proceeds from the race will go to benefit Special Olympics.
