The wreck was reported around 7 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Kimberly Road.

Police said an eastbound 2001 Hyundai Tiburon crossed the center line and struck a Medic ambulance head-on.  The driver of the Tiburon was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.  His name was withheld until his family was notified.

Two medics and one patient were in the ambulance at the time of the crash.  No one in the ambulance was hurt.

Seventh Day Adventist School Treasurer Mike Ode said he feared the worst after seeing the crash.

"I saw the red car was pretty much underneath the ambulance," Ode said. "It just looked like that if the person in the red car did survive, it would be a miracle.

Traffic was forced to detour through surrounding neighborhoods when police closed all lanes of Kimberly Road.  The road remained closed for more than two hours after the crash, with police clearing the scene at about 9:30 a.m.
