If the U.S. Department of Agriculture is forced to furlough employees, the department secretary is offering help.

The Des Moines Register reported that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is willing to give back part of his salary, should the department decide to make cuts.

The secretary told the Des Moines Register that the USDA is still assessing whether it needs to downsize because of the government-wide spending cuts.

Vilsack said the USDA has cut more than $700 million by cutting its workforce by 8% and modernizing and reducing waste. These actions have put the department in better shape than other cabinet departments, according to the Des Moines Register.
