Moline students win music awards

Van Arsdale award winners

Thirteen elementary school students from Moline were chosen to receive an award from a local scholarship fund.

The Hazel F. Van Arsdale Memorial Scholarship Fund was started to perpetuate the importance of music in elementary and secondary education.  Hazel Van Arsdale was a sixth-grade public school teacher for 36 years, and she was known for her strict-but-fun method of bringing music into the classroom.  Her goal was to strengthen students’ music interest beyond elementary school.

A committee made up of teachers and music professionals selected 13 Moline elementary students to receive this year’s awards from the fund, which is administered through The Moline Foundation.  Students must have excellent citizenship and be a role model for others.

Students receiving this year’s awards are Mia Burrill, Madison Rhea, Adriana Hernandez, Nicole Ellis, Derek Burgin, Carissa Gonzalez, Kate Schaechter, Madelaine Jacobs, Manuela Chavez, Kayla Veto, Allison Van, Izabel Jernigan and Lillian Driscoll.

(editor’s note: Historically, winners of this award each received a certificate, a trophy and a $50 savings bond, and we reported those items were included in the award.  A spokesperson for The Moline Foundation says the savings bond is no longer part of the award.  We regret the error. )
