Iowa woman accused of hanging boyfriend’s dog

A Des Moines woman reportedly explained killing her boyfriend’s dog by saying the dog barked too much and it was old and would die soon anyway.

A Des Moines woman reportedly explained killing her boyfriend’s dog by saying the dog barked too much and it was old and would die soon anyway.

Sheena Ann Cornwell, 28, was charged with animal torture in connection with the hanging death of Lillie, a ten-year-old dog adopted from a rescue shelter.

Joshua VanDyke said his girlfriend heard Lillie barking in the garage, and Sheena went outside.  Sheena returned a few minutes later and said she had killed the dog.

“When they (officers) had asked Sheena about this, she indicated that Lillie was old and she was going to die anyway; and indicated she didn’t appear to be at all remorseful,” said Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax.

VanDyke said Lillie was not a problem dog.  He also said the actions were out of character for self-proclaimed animal lover Sheena Cornwell.

Cornwell was arrested Saturday, April 6 and she was held in the Polk County Jail until her bond was posted later that same evening.
