Monmouth woman killed in two-car crash

A Monmouth, Illinois woman was fatally injured when the car she was riding in was struck by another car and she was ejected.

A Monmouth, Illinois woman was fatally injured when the car she was riding in was struck by another car and she was ejected.

The wreck was reported just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

Police said Betty Seward, 76, was a front-seat passenger in a car driven by 78-year-old Charles Seward.  Their car was westbound on 185th Avenue when Charles Seward failed to yield to traffic on U.S. Highway 67.

A southbound car struck their vehicle on the passenger side and Betty Seward was ejected.  She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Charles Seward was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.  His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

The other driver, 39-year-old Keith Pilkington of Knoxville, Illinois, refused medical treatment at the crash scene.

Police said Betty Seward was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; both drivers were wearing seat belts.
