‘American Pickers’ to expand in LeClaire

LeClaire leaders granted a TIF district to the area that includes the store operated by the stars of ‘American Pickers.’

LeClaire leaders granted a TIF district to the area that includes the store operated by the stars of ‘American Pickers.’

The city council voted Monday night, April 1, 2013 to designate the area around Antique Archaeology at 115 Davenport Street a tax increment financing, or TIF, district.

Not everyone at the meeting agreed with the decision.

“As a city, we need to be more cognizant of how we’re spending our TIF dollars; and if it’s not really necessary then we shouldn’t be doing it,” said Billie Edwards.

Loren long thinks it’s a good demonstration of the city’s support for the store and show boosting the local economy.

“For a business like Antique Archaeology, which has brought a lot of tourism to LeClaire, you know, why not?  It’s a no-brainer to me,” Long said.

Store owners were asking for a larger tax break than they received, though, because their expansion plans include creating a museum.  No date has been announced yet for the expansion.
