A man who said dogs were scaring cattle on his property now faces animal abuse charges for shooting at the hounds.

The dogs were reportedly part of a United Kennel Club hunting event held Saturday, March 23 near the property of William Totemeier of rural New London, Iowa.

Two dogs reportedly treed a raccoon just before Totemeier, 51, allegedly shot the hounds.

Totemeier told police the dogs had scared his cattle when he shot at them.  The hunters denied the dogs were near any cattle.

Totemeier was charged with two counts of animal abuse, and he surrendered to the Des Moines County Sheriff on March 29, 2013.  He posted $4,000 bond and was released that same day.

Court records show Totemeier was next scheduled to appear in court on the charges Friday, April 5, 2013.
