The Quad City environmental group, Living Lands and Waters is asking for help from the community.
Living Lands and Waters, based in East Moline, is a non-profit organization looking for volunteers to help with their Million Trees Project. Those working on the project are focused on improving the health of rivers in the Midwest by re-establishing the depleted population of hardwoods, according to a spokesperson.
“We do have six varieties of oak trees this year,” said Project Coordinator, Ashley Stover. “We focus on the hardwoods because there is less diversity along the river than we have been used to seeing, so that’s a main goal of ours.”
Volunteers are being called upon to help bundle trees in newspaper, dip roots in water and place trees in bags.
Anyone interested in helping can come to the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island from March 28 – March 31 and stay to help for as long or as little as they like between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Volunteers are asked to wear warm, comfortable clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty. Registration is not required, but recommended for groups of ten or more.
Trees will be distributed in April to individuals, families, schools, businesses, and organizations in ten states. The project goal as hinted by the name, is to plant 1 million trees.
