A fire west of Iowa City caused damages potentially affecting a winter service we all appreciate.

About half of the Johnson County snow plow fleet was damaged when a building caught fire on Monday, March 15.

KCRG reports eight snow plow trucks were damaged, two of them destroyed. It is estimated that damages will cost $2 million and may take several months to replace the trucks.

According to the county engineer, Greg Parker, the fire is thought to be caused by an exploding fuel or hydraulic tank.

Along with other contents of the building, hundreds of county records were destroyed in the fire.
