The new "Palms Theatre" on US Highway 61 and Mulberry Avenue opens in Muscatine Thursday.

The project cost $9 million, and crews broke ground on the 30,000 square foot facility in July. The city agreed to giving Fridley Theatres tax increment financing or TIF funds for the project.

Fridley Theatres also owns the "Plaza 4" theater in the Muscatine Mall. It will close down that complex Friday and move the 30 employees over to its new place.

The new complex will have a 53 foot wide and three-story high digital movie screen in one of its rooms. It will also have another theater room based for adults only. The theater says it will serve adult beverages in that room as well.

"Oz the Great and Powerful" is the first movie that will be showing at the new theater, and it starts at 3:40 p.m. The business hopes that more retail and restaurant buildings come to the intersection in the future.
