A University of Iowa graduate assistant was shot and killed Sunday night after authorities say he opened fire on police during a domestic disturbance call at a North Liberty mobile home park.

The Johnson County Sheriffs Department says Taleb Salameh, 28, was killed after officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at his house, and says gunshots were exchanged between Salameh and the first responders.

"When officers arrived, almost immediately upon entering the situation, there were gunshots exchanged", said Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek.

Three officers were wounded, and were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where they were treated and released.

A female at the home was not hurt. The officers are on paid administrative leave until the outside investigation into what happened is completed.

Salameh was a graduate research assistant in mechanical engineering at the University of Iowa.
