Almost 800 employees at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois are on a three day strike beginning on Monday.

Almost 800 employees at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois are on a three day strike beginning on Monday.

The Chicago Tribune reports that members of International Union Local 73 rejected a contract offer from the university and plan on striking until midnight on Thursday. The duties of the union include food service and custodial work.

Spokesperson for the university, Robin Kaler stated that staff on campus will be reassigned to take over striking staff’s “most essential services,” according to the Chicago Tribune. The strike is not expected to affect students.

According to the State Journal Register, negotiation issues include wages, provisions regarding retaliation against employees and the privatization of some work.

The strike has come after one year of fruitless contract negotiations. No further negotiations are scheduled.
