Woman behind Amber Alert hoax gets sentenced

An area woman who admitted lying to police about her baby’s kidnapping is going to prison.

An area woman who pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and endangering a child is going to prison.

Kendra Meaker, 19, of Toulon, Illinois was charged after she reported her infant daughter had been kidnapped from a car parked at the Toulon Post Office in September 2012.

Police launched an Amber Alert as a result of the report, and law enforcement and community members worked to search for the child.

Baby Mia Graci Thompson was found about 12 hours later, alone and alive along a rural gravel road.

Stark County Sheriff Jimmie Dison said Meaker admitted abandoning the baby.  After she was found competent to stand trial in November, Meaker entered a guilty plea in January 2013.

Meaker was sentenced at a 2 p.m. hearing Friday, March 8, 2013.   She will serve three years in jail for the felony obstructing justice charge and 364 days in jail for the misdemeanor endangering a child charge.  The judge ordered Meaker to serve the sentences concurrently and she will get credit for time she has already served.

Meaker had been held in the Stark County Jail since she was charged.

Family said Friday that both Mia and her older sister are doing well. They are in the custody of Meaker's parents.
