Head-on crash kills Lost Nation woman

Police said a woman who died in a head-on collision just west of Maquoketa was not wearing a seat belt.

Police said a woman who died in a head-on collision just west of Maquoketa was not wearing a seat belt.

The wreck was reported just before 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013 on Highway 64 at 24th Street.

Police said Jacqueline Fischer, 83, of Lost Nation was eastbound on Highway 64 when the car she was driving crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a westbound car.

Fischer was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where she died.  Police said Fischer was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

The driver of the other car, 30-year-old Zachary Schmidt of Maquoketa, was airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City.  His passenger, 24-year-old Bridgit Moran of Maquoketa was taken to a local hospital by ground ambulance.  Police said Moran and Schmidt both wore seat belts at the time of the crash.
