Davenport firefighters offering to install smoke detectors

The Davenport Fire Department is making an effort to get smoke detectors into every home in the city.

The Davenport Fire Department is making an effort to get smoke detectors into every home in the city.

According to Fire Engineer, Zachary Soliz the fire department has launched a new program installing free smoke detectors into homes.

The Davenport Fire Department has begun the project by surveying four Davenport schools. Students without smoke detectors in their homes had the opportunity to request them.

Working together with the State Fire Marshal’s office and Davenport Community Schools, they now have the resources to provide those homes with smoke detectors.

A question the department received during one of their visits with the local schools about fire safety inspired the program. A student asked how people who do not have smoke detectors know to get out of their house.

The goal of this program is to make sure every child grows up in a home with a smoke alarm.

Soliz urges people check the batteries in your smoke detectors twice per year. He recommends a good time to do this is when it’s time to change the clocks as Daylight Saving Time comes and goes.
