For at least the third time in about a month, a vehicle went through the ice at Iowa’s Clear Lake.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports Matthew Curry, 38, of Mason City was driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck when it went through the ice at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013.

The truck broke through the ice about 40 feet from the boat ramp at the downtown seawall.  The front of the truck was submerged, with the back end above the surface of the water.  The truck was pulled from the water later Tuesday morning.

Curry and his female passenger escaped the truck unharmed.

This is at least the third such incident on Clear Lake this year.  Ryan Thornton, 17, had to be rescued when his car broke through the ice on Clear Lake January 24.

David Hand, 20, was on the ice when his 1999 Jeep Cherokee broke through January 30.

DNR officials warn the weather has been inconsistent this season, leading to less predictable ice conditions on the lake.  Weather conditions can make it difficult to spot places where the ice might be weaker.
