Hy-Vee is voluntarily recalling some packages of two types of its store-brand dog food after elevated levels of a chemical contaminant were found.
Some samples of Hy-Vee dog foods recently showed higher-than-normal levels of aflatoxin, a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn. The Food and Drug Administration says the substance is especially prevalent in corn during drought conditions.
Animals that ingest elevated levels of aflatoxin can become ill.
The recalled dog food was distributed to Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin between October 26, 2012 and January 11, 2013.
While there is no risk to humans handling the affected dog food, and no animal illnesses have been reported, the potentially affected packages have been removed from store shelves.
The recall involves Hy-Vee Complete Dog – Complete Nutrition dog food, packaged in 4.4-pound, 8-pound and 34-pound green bags. Also recalled are Hy-Vee Complete Dog – Bites, Bones & Squares dog food packaged in 4.4-pound and 20-pound yellow bags.
The packages involved have “best by” dates in November 2013.
Any bag of Hy-Vee dog food that is part of the recall, whether opened or unopened, can be returned to the store for a full refund.
