Blockbuster stores in our area are among the 300 the company plans to close in the first half of 2013.

The company announced in January it would close about 300 stores and cut about 3,000 jobs this year.

KCRG reports all of the company’s stores in Iowa will close, including one at 2930 West Locust Street in Davenport and one at 2609 Second Avenue in Muscatine.  Inventory liquidation began Monday, February 18, 2013 and the stores will close in April.

This year’s closures follow about 500 U.S. Blockbuster stores closing in 2012.  The company also planned to close about 160 stores in the U.K.

When Dish Network acquired Blockbuster in 2011, the company was operating about 1,700 stores.  The most recent round of closings will leave about 500 Blockbuster stores in operation.
