Guilty verdict in murder of Cordova man

Jurors convicted a 22-year-old man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 64-year-old John Versypt of Cordova, Illinois.

Jurors convicted a 22-year-old man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 64-year-old John Versypt of Cordova, Illinois.

Versypt was checking on his rental properties at the Broadway Condominiums in Iowa City, Iowa October 8, 2009 when he was shot in the head during a robbery attempt.  He was 64 years old.

Justin Marshall, 22, and two other men were arrested in connection with the case.  Courtney White, 25 and Charles Thompson, 20, were both also charged in connection with the case.  Thompson pleaded guilty to being an accessory to a felony in exchange for his testimony against Marshall.  Thompson was scheduled to be sentenced February 15, 2013.   White pleaded guilty to assault and theft charges in connection with the case.

Two days after jury deliberations began, jurors delivered a guilty verdict on a first-degree murder charge against Marshall.   Sentencing was not yet set.  Marshall faces a possible sentence of life in prison.
