A former Clinton, Iowa doctor has lost his Iowa medical license after the state found him guilty of unprofessional conduct.
Amjad Butt, 58, practiced internal medicine and cardiology in Clinton. He was charged September 17, 2008 with engaging in a pattern of sexual harassment and unprofessional conduct.
After a hearing in July 2011, the Iowa Board of Medicine said the board did not find enough evidence to support the sexual harassment allegation. The board placed Dr. Butt on probation for five years, ordered him to pay $5,000 in penalties, and ordered him to complete a board-approved professional boundaries program.
A month later, when Dr. Butt failed to attend the program and to pay the fine and other fees assessed, the state filed new charges against him, alleging he willfully violated the board’s order. The board said he paid the penalty August 2, 2012 – more than a year after it was ordered.
So, the board ordered an additional $5,000 civil penalty and suspended Dr. Butt’s Iowa medical license until it is paid and he becomes compliant with the other terms of their previous order.
The Iowa Board of Medicine says Dr. Butt practices now in Selma, Alabama. Online records show he was cited for failing to comply with that state’s continuing medical education requirements in April 2012. His Alabama medical license expires in December 2013.
Online records show he has also practiced in several locations in Tennessee. His Tennessee medical license expired in April 2012. The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners ruled that if he seeks to reinstate his medical license there, he would be on probation for five years and he could face other conditions because of the action taken against him in Iowa.
