Local college student pushes for helmet law
A St. Ambrose student is using her own personal tragedy to fuel efforts to get a helmet law passed in Iowa.
Just before her senior year in high school, Caroline Found died in a moped accident in Iowa City.
Her friend, Olivia Lofgren, is responding by taking a youth helmet bill to Iowa’s General Assembly on Thursday.
“It was really really hard for everybody in our community so hope for a helmet was a way for us to funnel our emotions and anger into a positive way,” said Lofgren.
The bill would require all minors operating a motorized bicycle to wear a helmet or face a fine.
Iowa and Illinois are two of the three states without some form of helmet law. The bill has already been introduced this legislative session. The bill is SF 37.
