Bitter Cold Hits Quad Cities

GMQC tests some “Winter Experiments” as wind chills of -22 degrees are seen in the Quad Cities

A cold blast of air mixed with winds overnight Thursday to bring wind chills Friday morning to the lowest levels in years.

The National Weather Service says wind chill readings plunged to -22 in Davenport Friday morning and -19 officially at the Quad City International Airport in Moline.

The coldest wind chills were recorded north of the Quad Cities.  Dubuque recorded a low of -26 wind chill and Clinton saw -23.

Several school districts started classes an hour or two later because of the bitter weather conditions.

Throughout the morning, News 8 conducted some weather experiments involving "Good Morning Quad Cities" science class drop-out Jim Mertens.

He tried to throw hot water in the air to see if it would crystallize.  He found out the water has to be really hot.  Second tries are always helpful.

An experiment with a damp t-shirt was more successful.  It was frozen solid within minutes.

Doctors warn anyone going outdoors to be prepared for the very cold temperatures and wind chill conditions.  Dress accordingly and try to limit the amount of time you need to be outdoors.
