A 17-year-old was rescued after his car broke through ice covering Clear Lake.

Ryan Thornton was reportedly driving a 2002 Volkswagen Passat on the lake just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013.  The car became partially submerged when the ice beneath the car cracked.

Thornton was about two-tenths of a mile from the shore.  He reportedly used his cell phone to call for help.

Firefighters got Thornton out of the vehicle and safely to shore.  He was not hurt.

WHO-TV reports Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals said there were several other vehicles and ice houses on the lake when Thornton’s car broke through the ice.

Thornton’s stranded car was expected to be removed from the ice sometime Friday, January 25.
