Animal caused hundreds to lose power on frigid morning

Hundreds of residents in and near Carbon Cliff and Silvis, Illinois lost power as temperatures hovered near zero Monday morning, January 21, 2013. 

MidAmerican Energy reported more than 1,900 customers on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities were without power as of 10:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service reported an official temperature of four degrees at the Quad City International Airport at that time.

Most of the outages were in eastern Rock Island County.  Carbon Cliff had 860 customers without power; 499 Silvis customers were without power and more than 300 customers in Colona were without electricity.  Nearly 150 customers had no electricity in unincorporated parts of eastern Rock Island County.

All but about a dozen of the customers who lost power were restored by about 11:15 a.m.

A spokesperson for MidAmerican Energy said the outage was caused by an animal that got into their equipment.
