Subway's dealing with some social media fallout this week, all triggered by a photo posted on Facebook by a customer in Australia.

In it, a man identifying himself as Matt Corby puts a footlong sub next to a tape measure to find it was only 11 inches long. The photo went on to get more than 131,000 likes and thousands of comments.

News 8 Thursday decided to have fun with the not-quite-footlong "controversy" and bought five footlong sandwiches on white bread from five separate Quad City locations. Only one measured out at 12 inches exactly-- the other four ranged between 11 inches and 11.25 inches.

"We are committed to providing a consistent product delivering the same amount of bread to the customer with every order," Subway told ABC News in a statement this week. "The length however may vary slightly when not baked to our exact specifications.  We are reinforcing our policies and procedures in an effort to ensure our offerings are always consistent no matter which Subway restaurant you visit."
