The White House has quadrupled the number of signatures required to receive an official response to petitions posted on its website.

We the People” was created as an online platform through which citizens could submit petitions to the Obama administration.

A blog on the White House website explains the popularity of “We the People” petitions made the higher signature requirement necessary.

“As we’ve seen overall use skyrocket, more petitions are crossing the threshold — and doing so much more quickly,” the blog said.

About 73,000 petitions have been created and nearly 5 million signatures have been registered on the site since the November election.

Previously, a petition had to reach 25,000 signatures within 30 days to receive an official response.   Before that, the threshold was 5,000 signatures.

As of January 15, 2013, petitions must reach 100,000 signatures to get that official response.  The new limit will not be applied retroactively to petitions created before January 15.
