Homemade bomb detonated at Augustana College

Police said a homemade bomb was detonated outside a residence hall on the campus of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Police said a homemade bomb was detonated outside a residence hall on the campus of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Police said they were called to the area of Westerlin Hall, in the 3200 block of 10th Avenue, just before 3 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013.  Investigators said they found residue and other evidence indicating a “MacGyver bomb” had been detonated outside the building. 

Such devices are usually made of a plastic bottle containing a chemical or combination of chemicals that explode.

Police said no injuries were reported and no damage was done to the building. 

Brett Johnson, 19, of Beach Park, Illinois was arrested in connection with the incident.  Johnson was charged with disorderly conduct and jailed in lieu of $1,500 bond.

Johnson posted bond and was released that same morning.
