Chicago Police said a disputed death earlier in the year made it unclear whether the city had officially recorded 500 homicides for 2012.
The homicide total for Chicago was 499 Thursday, December 27, before a man was fatally shot outside a west-side convenience store. Police said there was some dispute about whether a different case from earlier in December would remain classified as a homicide.
The Chicago Tribune reported the last time Chicago recorded 500 or more homicides was in 2008 when the official total for the year was 512.
CNN reported homicides in New York City were expected to hit a record low number for 2012, and that shootings in New York City were also at their lowest levels in at least 18 years.
