Water main break causes residents to leave

Thursday morning’s water main break caused two residents in “The Hill” neighborhood on 15th Avenue to evacuate their home.

ROCK ISLAND - Thursday morning's water main break caused two residents in "The Hill" neighborhood on 15th Avenue to evacuate their home.

As previously reported, the water main break happened before 4 a.m. Thursday. The break happened in the alleyway behind 15th Avenue and caused a gaping hole in the side of resident Brandon Foley's home.

"My new carpet from the spring would have been toast," Foley said. "I heard the bricks from my wall cave in, so I grabbed my girlfriend. I grabbed the dog, and I got out of the house."

Around 4 Thursday, inspectors deemed Foley's house "unfit for human occupancy." He and neighbor Gary McQuaide have been forced out of their homes.

"I went down to the basement this morning," McQuaide said. "I go, 'what the heck is going on?'"

Water gushed into McQuaide's home as well. He does not know when he will be able to return to his home.

"My sister's going to let me live there for a little while," he said. "It'll be really fun."

Crews restored the area to full water pressure early Thursday afternoon. McQuaide says he does not know whether his insurance company will pay for his damages because he doesn't have flood insurance. Foley also doesn't know how much his insurance company will pay for the hole the water created.
