MOLINE - The city of Moline passed its 2013 budget Tuesday night.
The budget calls for the city to spend $130 million in the upcoming year. That is $10 million more than the city spent this year.
The city claims that it has more money this year because of increased income, hotel, and sales tax revenue. It plans on putting the extra money into its general fund to pay for increased medical costs and its pension system.
"Those kinds of things continue to go up on a regular basis," Moline Mayor Don Welvaert said of the increased medical and pension costs. "So again, we're looking at ways to cut costs while also looking at increased revenues."
In other council news, the Save the Moline Depot group lobbied for more time to get funding to move the Moline Train Depot to Western Illinois University. The city says it he will cost them $155,000 to move the building and make way for the new I-74 bridge. The city has given the group until December 18th to raise the money, but it has only raised about half the amount it needs. The city will vote on whether to give the group more time to raise funds at its council meeting next Tuesday.
