Two area men are facing manslaughter charges in connection with a May 2012 boating crash that left four people dead.

Matthew House, 21; Jacob Boyd, 22; Caitlyn Atchley, 20 and Blake Eakins, 21 were all killed when two jon boats collided in the Mississippi River before dawn May 19, 2012.

Several others were injured in the crash.

The boats were being used to shuttle partiers to and from an island in the Mississippi River in Des Moines County when the crash happened.

Officials said at least one of the boats was significantly overloaded with passengers and the boaters were on the water in the dark, making operating conditions more dangerous.

Burlington residents Joseph Steven Schier Jr., 21 and Douglas Charles Metcalf, 22 are each charged with one count of boating while intoxicated causing death.  Each man also faces four counts of voluntary manslaughter.

Both men were held in the Des Moines County Jail.
