Fire damages Rock Island duplex

Someone at a neighboring business saw smoke and reported fire at a Rock Island duplex.

The fire was reported just before 10 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2012 at a duplex in the 1200 block of 11th Street in Rock Island, Illinois.

No one was home in the upstairs unit at the time of the fire.  One person was asleep in the downstairs unit and was awakened by smoke detectors sounding inside the building. 

The resident reportedly tried unsuccessfully to put the fire out with water from the sink.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire when they arrived.

Damage from smoke and fire was confined to the upstairs unit.  There was water damage throughout the building. 

Damage is estimated at $5,000 to the structure.

The cause of the fire was not yet determined. 

No injuries were reported.
