Two landmark Quad City donut shops abruptly shut down earlier this month, leaving customers and unpaid workers in the dark.

Donuts 'N More in Moline has been around for close to 30 years, but the place is now shuttered, the shelves empty.

"We worked Tuesday, November 6th and we got a phone call on the 7th, the next day, that said the shops were closed," said Angela Howard, a baker at Donuts 'N More for 12 years.

She and her husband Johnny, who has worked as a baker there for 18 years, have not been paid since. Neither have the rest of the 20 or so employees who worked at the two stores.

They say a man who was buying the place on contract, Job Tillis of DeWitt, pulled the plug on the place in Moline and the location in Davenport without notice.

Andrea McDermott, who was selling the shops to Tillis, says she has now taken back ownership and hired a new general manager. She says both locations will re-open Monday, December 3rd.

"We're happy to get back to work before Christmas," said the Howards, who met on the job and married a couple years ago.

"The shop's taken some hard knocks in the last three and a half years. We're ready to turn it around. A clean slate."
