Ski Resorts Making Snow

Snow making operations start at area ski resorts as cold overnight temperatures settle in the region

GALENA, Illinois- Ski resorts like Chestnut Mountain and Ski Snowstar are making snow right now.

News 8's "Good Morning Quad Cities" showed you live cameras at Chestnut Mountain ine Galena Tuesday morning as snow-making operations continued.  Temperatures Tuesday morning before dawn were at 10-degrees.

Chestnut Mountain uses 70 snow making machines and three turbine pumps to help cover 60-acres of ski area near Galena.  

Chestnut Mountain operators say they could open Friday or Saturday.  If the hills open Friday, it will be the seventh time in 11 years the resort has offered skiing in November.

Ski Snowstar in Andalusia also started snow making operations Tuesdays in preparation for the coming season.  The Rock Island County ski hill operation had all of its snow machines in operation Tuesday morning.

Snowstar operators say the ski resort may not open until December 8th at the soonest.  Snow making operations need 72 hours of cold weather for the ski hills to be ready for skiers and snowboarders.

Operators of Dubuque's Sundown Mountain resort plan to open Friday and will feature a "Snowvember Film Fest".
