An Iowa company recalled cherry tomatoes distributed in eight states, including Iowa and Illinois, because of a potential Salmonella contamination.
Capital City Fruit of Norwalk, Iowa distributed Capital Brand cherry tomatoes in a one-pint clamshell container to stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The company recalled cherry tomatoes associated with a larger recall from Rio Queen Citrus, Inc.
The recalled cherry tomatoes were sent to stores between November 14 and November 18, 2012.
The label on the affected containers has a four-digit date code on the lower-right side of the label. Containers with these date codes should be discarded: 4604, 4605, 4606 and 4701 (see label photo example below).
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. On rare occasions the Salmonella organism can enter the bloodstream and produce arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
So far, there have been no reported illnesses attributed to the recalled cherry tomatoes.
