An investigator serving a warrant on a registered sex offender fired shots when that man’s dog attacked.
Members of the Scott County Sex Offender Task Force were serving warrants on Thomas Brunton, 54, who was wanted for two counts of failing to register as a sex offender. Brunton is required to verify his contact information with the sheriff’s office every six months.
Task force members went to Brunton’s home just before 5 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2012. They were behind Brunton’s house when a dog attacked.
“A Doberman Pincher was released from the residence and the dog aggressively approached a detective of the Davenport Police Department and then attacked,” according to a spokesman for the Davenport Police Department.
When the detective could not fight off the dog, he fired a shot at the animal.
The shot grazed the dog and stopped the attack. The police spokesman said the dog suffered a minor injury and no humans were hurt in the incident.
Brunton was arrested. He was released from the Scott County Jail after posting $2,000 bond.
