MidAmerican Energy Warns of scam calls

MidAmerican Energy Company has renewed warnings for customers about several scams involving calls made to its customers.

MidAmerican Energy Company has renewed warnings for customers about several scams involving calls made to its customers.

Company reps posted twice Tuesday, November 13, 2012 that customers were getting calls from someone posing as a MidAmerican Energy employee.

In a press release on its website, the company warned businesses in the Des Moines area of scammers who call and say immediate payment is needed to avoid disconnection of utility services.

The company also posted a more direct warning to its entire customer base on its Facebook page at about 4:30 p.m. that same day.

“If you receive a call from 317-493-5507 and the person claims to be from MidAmerican Energy, this is a scam. This is not a MidAmerican Energy phone number. Any calls from this number should be reported immediately to local law enforcement,” the post said.

“Credit card numbers and personal information should not be provided to suspicious callers. If a customer receives a suspicious call, mailing, email or other type of unusual contact or offer from a person or company claiming to be from or working on behalf of MidAmerican Energy, the customer should end the call immediately and contact local law enforcement. Customers also should call MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632 to report the incident and seek assistance. Customer service associates can confirm a bill payment, service work, or an appointment at a customer’s home or business,” said a statement on MidAmerican Energy’s website.
