DAVENPORT - The Salvation Army kicked off its 2012 Red Kettle Campaign Friday night.

The Salvation Army held the event at the NorthPark Mall in Davenport. Mayor Bill Gluba revealed the Red Kettle goal for this year, which is $725,000 locally.

"Based on people's needs, we believe that's the amount of dollars that we need to raise," Major Gary Felton said. "We need that to continue to provide the services that we give."

Last year, the Salvation Army of the Quad Cities exceeded its goal of $700,000 for the Red Kettle Campaign. It raised about $720,000, but it had to extend its deadline last year. The Salvation Army does not want to have to do the same thing this year.

"We just have trust in those from the Quad Cities," Felton said. "We know they're very generous and they always seem to come through for us in the end. We're just trusting that this year will be a success as well."

The Red Kettle Campaign assists people who can't afford Christmas Day dinners, clothes, and even toys. The Salvation Army raises money by sticking red kettles at shopping malls and grocery stores nationwide.

This year, the Salvation Army will have 27 kettles on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities and 21 kettles on the Iowa side of the Quad Cities. To learn more on how to give online, click here.
