If you heard an unusually loud noise in the Quad Cities area Thursday night, we now know its cause.

Officials at the Quad City International Airport confirmed there was an “engine run-up” happening at the airport at about 10:10 p.m.  It lasted about five minutes.

The run-up was done to check the performance of an MD 83 aircraft.   An MD 83 can hold 150 passengers.

During a run up, throttles are often advanced to ensure they can produce thrust needed for the aircraft to take off and fly.   That’s what makes the loud noise.

Area residents described the noise as one they thought sounded like a jet engine revving but not moving.   Some people in Moline said the noise was so loud the windows rattled in their homes.
