Galesburg woman charged for fatal hit-and-run

Police say a 33-year-old woman was intoxicated when the vehicle she drove struck and killed a Knox College student.

The crash was reported at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, October 28, 2012 in the 100 block of West South Street.   Tundun Lawani, a junior at Knox College, was taken to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Several people were posting to a Facebook group started in memory of Lawani. 

Lakeesha Smith was arrested Sunday afternoon.  She is charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a fatality accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, expired registration and no valid insurance.

Smith was held in the Knox County Jail.  She was scheduled to appear in Knox County Court at 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 29.
