A fish kill in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is being attributed to a water main break that discharged 2,000 gallons of drinking water McCloud Run trout stream.
A water main break happened at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2012 near the intersection of Center Point Road and Center Street Northeast.
Cedar Rapids city officials initially estimated 2,000 gallons of chlorinated water discharged when the water main broke. That estimate was later upgraded to “less than 5,000 gallons.”
Initial checks of the stream showed no problems.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said city workers found 48 dead trout in the stream at 2 p.m. the day after the water main break.
The dead trout are mostly small, in the three- to four-inch size range.
A statement on the Iowa DNR website said the organization was considering possible enforcement action, and that its staff was monitoring the site and conducting a fish kill count.
McCloud Run trout stream runs through the city of Cedar Rapids.
