A police pursuit up Highway 61 ended after the suspect vehicle got stuck in a muddy plowed field.
It started just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012. A Des Moines County Sheriff’s deputy said he recognized John Thomas Curry III, 40, as Curry a dark blue Jeep Liberty through some parking lots before driving behind 61 Chop House.
The deputy said he knew Curry’s Iowa driver’s license was suspended. The deputy also said Curry drove over the white line twice as he traveled north from the chop house on Highway 61.
When the deputy tried to pull him over, Curry allegedly drove 85 miles per hour and tried to elude the deputy. Curry reportedly drove past Highway 78 in Louisa County before he drove off the road, through a ditch and into a muddy corn field, where the deputy lost sight of the Jeep.
He later found the vehicle stuck in the mud in the field.
Just before 4:30 a.m., Louisa County deputies were sent to investigate a man who came out of the woods and got into a white Ford Focus. They found the Focus and Curry was allegedly in the back seat when they pulled the vehicle over.
The deputy said Curry also had methamphetamine in his right shoe.
Curry was arrested on initial charges of eluding a police officer and possession of a controlled substance. He was held in the Des Moines County Jail.
