Firefighters rescued one woman through a window after fire broke out in a house in downtown Rock Falls.

The fire was reported just after 3 a.m. at 303 West Second Street.   A dentist’s office is on the ground floor, and three people were in an upstairs apartment at the time of the fire.

All three people got out safely.  One of them got out through a second-story window with help from firefighters.

The building sustained major damage on the upper half due to fire and on the lower half from smoke and water.   Firefighters fought the blaze from above as well as from the ground.

A lack of wind allowed thick smoke to hang over and around the burning building but it also helped prevent the fire from possibly spreading to neighboring land and buildings.

Firefighters were continuing to extinguish hot spots at 8 a.m.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

The American Red Cross was assisting the three residents displaced by the fire.

No injuries were reported.
