With the help of  Ascentra Credit Union, WQAD gives away 300-dollars twice a month to someone who "pays it forward" in our area.  This week we are giving it to Betty Williams.

Betty Williams spends much of her days in the kitchen as a cake artist whose work has been a part of weddings, birthdays and events around the Quad Cities for years.

Betty has decades of experience and hours of training but her prices don’t always reflect that.  She says she likes to keep her cakes affordable so that everyone can enjoy a professionally done cake.  But lately Betty has been hit with some challenges of her own.

She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  She says the pain and struggle has slowed her down but has not stopped her.  Betty attributes that positive attitude to her faith in God.

“I knew that he was getting my attention so that I could redirect my life, not only to just serve him but to serve others as well,” Betty says.

Andre Scales, who is a member Betty’s church says she continues to find a way to not only keep the layers of frosting coming but to do it with that bright contagious smile of hers.  That is why Andre thought there would be no one better to pay it forward to.

“I am just amazed that he paid attention,” Williams said with excited.  “It’s humbling, it’s very humbling.”

Humble and giving are two words that could easily describe the woman who has changed many lives around her.

“I do things not to get a reward.  I do things because I want to make sure that other people are benefiting from me living here on this earth.”

If you would like to contact Betty to make a cake for your event, you can reach her at 563-579-8215.
