There are questions but no answers over how a Democratic candidate for Rock Island County Board would fulfill her duties if elected while living 250 miles away in Indiana.
Mia Mayberry is running for District 20 for the county board seat held for years by her father, Virgil.
But, Mayberry is a full-time, first-year law student in Valparaiso, Indiana and won't say how she plans to make monthly county board meetings in the middle of the week, and attend more frequent, required week-day committee meetings.
Her oppponent, Republican Linda Soyke-Haake says, it's not right.
"How can you serve your community when you're not here?" Haake questioned during an interview with WQAD-TV on Tuesday.
Like Mayberry, Soyke-Haake is a political newcomer. The 65-year-old has lived on the west side of Rock Island all her life, retired from John Deere Insurance as a field rep.
"How can you represent Rock Island County, particularly your district, when you not here to know what's even going on?" she said.
Mia Mayberry is M.I.A when it comes to explaining her plans if she's elected. She cancelled an interview with WQAD set for Friday. Calls to her in Indiana have not been returned.
Her father, Virgil, gave up the seat to run for circuit clerk, but lost in the March primary. The head of the Rock Island County Republicans says she believes the situation is ripe for a political "bait and switch."
"She's four hours away. If she should win that district, then I think her father, who has served there before, has his eye on that position and wants to be appointed into that seat," said Susie Carpentier, the G-O-P chairwoman.
"It's time for her not only to address the press but the people of the 20th District," Carpentier said.
