It was just last November when the Berg family lost their son, Levi, but they have found a way to keep his memory alive through America’s favorite pastime.
"He was a good kid with a big heart, “says Robin Berg.
It’s been almost one year since Robin lost her son Levi. Levi, a Stark County high school student, was killed in a car crash along with two of his friends just outside Henry County in November 2011. Investigators say the vehicle lost control and rolled several times.
Levi was only 16 when he died. The Berg family wanted to keep Levi’s memory alive and they did it the only way they knew how - through baseball.
“My son loved baseball, he was an avid player and it’s something that would mean a lot to him,” says Robin.
“He was fun, fun loving really, he loved baseball,” says Levi’s cousin, Skye Marshall.
They put together a fundraiser scholarship in his memory on Saturday, September 22nd. It was held at Thomas Park in Wyoming, Illinois. There were food vendors, a silent auction, bags and basketball tournament and of course - softball.
The money they make from the fundraiser will go towards a sports scholarship. One student from Levi’s graduation class of 2013 will be chosen to receive the scholarship. Family and friends say this is what Levi would have wanted.
"I think he's looking down on us and I think he's really loving it. I think he loves that his friend are getting together. We've got all of his friends together. I think some of the baseball team and stuff so I think he would be really proud,” says Marshall.
The Berg family plans on continuing the fundraiser every year.
