A scam that first targeted utility customers in May has reportedly resurfaced, this time targeting Hispanic customers of MidAmerican Energy Company.

Spokespersons for the company issued a warning Wednesday, September 19, 2012.

Scammers posing as MidAmerican Energy customer service reps call customers and tell them their account is past due and immediate payment is required to avoid disconnection.  The scammer then asks for the customer’s credit card or debit information to complete payment.

“A similar scam occurred in May. After MidAmerican Energy worked with local media outlets to make customers aware of the scam, the number of reports dropped significantly; however, the scam appears to be active again,” said a statement from the company.

Customers who get such a call are advised to end the conversation and call MidAmerican Energy’s customer service line at (888) 427-5632.  Company representatives there can confirm whether the call was real or a scam.  They can also confirm bill payment and answer any other customer questions.

“If a customer receives a suspicious call or any other type of unusual contact, local law enforcement should be contacted immediately,” the company statement said.
