More than 400 workers at a Fort Madison, Iowa wind turbine blade factory will reportedly be out of work because of layoffs.

Siemens Energy Inc. blames the layoffs on Congress not renewing a wind energy tax credit and an increase in the number of natural gas-fired power plants.

KCRG reports Siemens Energy Inc. will lay off those workers and about 200 more in its Hutchinson, Kansas and Orlando, Florida facilities.

Full-time workers with at least six months on the job will get severance packages.

The layoffs leave about 1,000 workers in Siemens’ wind power business in the U.S.   About 220 workers will be retained at the Fort Madison plant to support ongoing operations.
